A popular quote says “The journey to a thousand steps begins with the first one.” These words aptly describe the preparation laid by a young lady who has an insurmountable amount of willpower in life. Ivy T. Apolinario is a March 2013 graduate of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Operations Management. She has hurdled numerous difficulties and still emerged victorious. Finishing her degree is her “BIG LEAP” towards a better future, says Ivy.
Following is the speech she has delivered during the CBA Magnate Awards in March 2013. May these words leave good thoughts and inspiration to everyone. Life is not a bed of roses…but along the way, we learn from the lessons and people we meet.
“If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” – by Benjamin Franklin.
CBA Magnate Awards happens every year to give recognition to students who had excelled in their academic and non-academic pursuits. For me, this event is not just a day of recognition but also a realization of dreams. Yes, a realization of dreams. It was two years ago when I first witnessed a student who gave her insights and reflections on this stage. Her name was Sheena Pagsuyoin, she was the first honors then and she graduated as a Summa Cum Laude in this University. As I listened to her, I got inspired and started to have a dream. A dream that one day, I will also be able to stand in front of the CBA Achievers, CBA faculty and guests, with all eyes on me, sharing my victory, my joy and my story. Finally! The dream I’ve been waiting for has come. I am here in front of you. God is really good.
My journey in college life has never been easy. There were times when I thought that I could not make it anymore. Fate had tested me so much. I’ve encountered a lot of hardships and pitfalls. There were times when I had to stop schooling because my family could not afford it anymore. I worked as a cashier in a food chain and in a department store. There, I learned how to deal with different kinds of people. I was able to realize the value of every centavo that my parents had spent for me.Thus, I promised to myself that I will work hard to become worthy of all their investments in me.
Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve been to different schools in my college journey. I’ve been to University of the Philippines, Los Banos in Laguna, Mabini Colleges in Daet, Jose Rizal University in Mandaluyong, University of the East in Manila and now here in the University of Nueva Caceres. I took up Forestry, Nursing, Accountancy and now Business Administration Major in Operations Management. You may be wondering why?The reason was that I didn’t know what I really like then. I was confused because I still didn’t know what my real purpose in life. But you know what? I don’t have regrets for what happened to me.I believe that God had put me in that situation because He has a better plan for me. He let me experienced the wrong courses and He brought me into the wrong schools because He wanted me to appreciate the right one. He allowed me to explore in order to have a better view of who I really am and what I really want. Now, I’m here in the College of Business and Accountancy at the University of Nueva Caceres and I could say, that it’s here where I truly belong. I believe everything happens for a reason. Because of what I’ve been through, I learned that in life, God will not give you what you want but He will give you what you need. It may not be on the time that you want it, but it will come on His perfect time. All we need to have are patience and faith.
I did not grow up in a wealthy family but I could say that I am a rich person. I am rich not in materials and luxurious things but I am rich because I was blessed with beautiful, caring, supportive and very loving family. My family is my inspiration. They are the reason why I am still striving to achieve all my dreams. I am just sad that they cannot come here tonight because my Grandmother is in the hospital right now and that they had to take care of her. Anyway, I will just wait for our graduation day since they promised that they will all come to celebrate the realization of our dream – my college graduation day. To my loving family, thank you and I love you! You are the wind beneath my wings and there’s nothing I can’t do because I have you.
God has been really so good to me. He never let me down. During my darkest despair when I thought I was all alone, He was the one who gave me all the hope and encouragement. My faith in Him keeps me alive. Yes! He is the one giving us al the trials, challenges and difficulties that we are facing everyday. But I want you to know that He is not doing that because he doesn’t care for us, or because He just wants us to suffer. His purpose is for us to become better and stronger persons. He also wants us to realize that He is REAL, that we just have to look and ask for His help because He is just waiting for us. We must not be afraid to face life every day. Every day is a gift from God. Every day is beautiful. Every day brings new hope. If we will only nurture our relationship with Him, you will see that God will give you all the strength and courage that you need in order to win all your battles in life.
I would also like to take this opportunity to honor and thank all our professors in the CBA Department, most especially our very supportive and caring Dean, Dr. Nora Elizabeth Maniquiz. I will not mention the name of each and every professor that I been with in this University, but I want you to know that I am very grateful for all the time you’ve devoted in sharing your knowledge and expertise to us.
My dear teachers, you played a vital role in enriching our minds and in shaping our characters. Wherever we may go, you will always be part of who we are and we will forever cherish the moments we had with you. We’re sorry for the times we made you feel mad and disappointed with our behaviours and be assured that we don’t have anything against you. We understand that you just want us to become responsible, competent, morally upright, socially responsible and productive individuals who are ready to participate actively in nation building. In behalf of all the CBA students, I would like to say thank you so much, we love you and you will never be forgotten! We hope that one day, you’ll be proud that we were once your students.
And of course, how can I forget to thank all my friends here in the University. Thank you for giving me a space in your heart. Thank you for making me smile, laugh, cry and making my stay in the University never a dull experience. All the thoughts I have with you, I will treasure. I love you and stay happy.
Before I end, let me sing you a verse of a song which always inspires and helps me surmount all the challenges I face in life. This song is entitled “SMILE”.
“Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you’ll get by
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You will see that life is worthwhile
If you’ll just SMILE.”
Thank you and May God bless us all.
Cheerio! And till we meet again.
Those were the inspiring words from a young lady who is full of hopes and dreams. Seldom do we find a person who is as determined as Ivy. Dreaming is easy…but doing what it takes to achieve such dream entails a lot of patience, valour and fortitude. We might find ourselves in various situations that will test our willpower and strength to move on. We might meet people who are not supportive in our quest for success. But throughout all these, let us not forget that it is we who make the choices in our lives. There may be obstacles, but rising above them is what determines our ultimate success. As Ivy said in her parting song, SMILE!
