The University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) in partnership with Indonesia’s Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) sponsored a Research Colloquium held on June 20, 2013 at UNC’s Instructional Media Center. The theme centered on “Enhancing International Collobarative Research on Education, Sciences and Humanities.” Dr. Dwi Suluworo, Editor of Proceeding, UAD’s research publication, said this was part of the mutual cooperation between the two universities which is intended to study the issues concerning the aforesaid fields.
The research colloquium was made possible through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the two universities on June 2010. “One of the provisions in the MOU is research collaboration and joint research activities where the two universities could present their respective faculty researches either here in the Philippines or in Indonesia,” explained Dr. Nora Elizabeth F. Maniquiz, Dean of UNC’s College of Business and Accountancy and UAD’s contact person in UNC. UNC’s very own Professor Irene M. Largo travelled to Indonesia to present her paper earlier this year. Dr. Maniquiz herself was invited to become a resource speaker at UAD on December 2012.
Maniquiz stated that the colloquium serves as a good venue for UNC professors to gain exposure in the field of research. “Through the colloquium, faculty members will be motivated to conduct researches and later on present their findings in colloquiums like this,” she said.
The event, which was a first of its kind in UNC, featured some of the finest researches conducted by faculty members of both sponsoring universities. UAD’s researches include: Phase Locked Loop Technique for Cryogenics Research and Education, Some Strategies for Enhancing and Cooperation in the Field of Humanities, Development of Anti-Cancer Agent from Eurycoma Longifolia Jack and Enhancing Collobarative Research in Health for Consumer Protection. On the other hand, UNC’s esteemed faculty members, Dr. Yolanda L. Castroverde, Dr. Romeo M. Sumayo and Prof. Shiela Anzano presented their respective researches entitled Development and Ecosystem Conditions of the Municipality of Del Gallego, CREATE: A Teacher Evaluation Model and Vegetarian Practices and their Physical Health.
Dr. Castroverde who is also UNC’s Research Director observed that UAD’s researches vary from those conducted by UNC. “UAD’s researches are highly technical and scientific. They focus on laboratory research for the development of a particular theory and pure research meant for field testing, while UNC’s researches worked more on information generation on socio-economic and environmental fields. ” Castroverde commented.
Castroverde believes that the activity helped UNC in preparation for the implementation of the ASEAN 2015 and the new typology of CHED which will be implemented in 2016. “It is a step towards internationalization,” she added.
Both Castroverde and Maniquiz have high hopes for the research collaboration between UNC and UAD. Castroverde trusts that the activity will pave the way for researches conducted by UNC faculty members to be published internationally. Maniquiz, on the other hand, said that she wishes for the collaboration (with UAD) to continue and “spark more collaborations with other institutions not just in Asia but in other parts of the world.”
On June 19, 2013, a day before the research colloquium, UNC signed another Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Indonesia’s Institute of Science and Technology Akprind.
