This deals with the collection of extensive information about the individual for proper understanding, decision-making and placement.
A record of pertinent information about the student’s personal and family background and academic and career concerns is maintained. This record is strictly confidential. Orientations on guidance programs and services are also conducted.
Types of Information that can be disseminated to clients:
- Personal-Social. These are information regarding how one can improve oneself or how one can improve relationship with others.
- Vocational-Occupational Information. These are information that will help students plan and manage their career.
- Educational/Academic Information. These are information that will enable students to make decisions regarding the school he/she is in or wishes to enter.
Individual and group counseling sessions are held to facilitate better self-understanding and adjustment to life. These are offered to all students along the personal-social, academic, and vocational aspects. Certified school counselors provide the counseling service. The ratio of qualified school counselors should be one is to thousand per department based upon enrollment in freshman to senior year.
This intends to facilitate students’ movement to the appropriate level of their vocational program, entry into the appropriate co-curricular and extracurricular activities, pursuit of a program of advanced education, or employment upon leaving school. Types of placement services that can be given to clienteles are personal-social placements, academic placement and occupational/career placement.
Various tests on intelligence, aptitude, interest and personality are regularly administered and interpreted to students in order to help them assess their personal strengths and liabilities. Accredited psychometrist with appropriate training in educational research, measurement and statistics provide testing service. This service is also extended to other people in the university and the community.
This comprises the appraisal of how counselees who have been counseled, placed or referred or have graduated are doing and if additional assistance is necessary.
Research and Evaluation
Action researches and program evaluation are periodically conducted to ensure that the unit is continuously in touch with and responsive to the students’ developmental needs and concerns
The counselors work with specialists, parents, teachers and administrators to get a wider picture of the counselees’ difficulties and concerns, and to arrive at appropriate interventions.
Clientele and counselors should be involved in promoting lifestyle change for healthy living through lectures, seminars, workshops, small group discussions, and film viewing. Different wellness strategies that can be given: stress management /prevention program, recreation and leisure/quieting activities.
Peer Facilitators’ Program
Cognizant of the tendency of young people to seek help from their peers, the counselors conduct the regular training of peer facilitators on basic facilitating and helping skills.
