Acceptable Use and Internet Policy

Computer workstations are located within each library, internet and computer laboratories. Internet use will be limited to sessions with a maximum of 2 hours per student per sitting at the Internet Center, while computer laboratories are upon request of the teacher.  Wireless Internet Access is offered within each library and areas that are WIFI zone limited to time periods when library or the room is open.

Internet users should have no expectation of privacy, should be considerate of other users, and refrain from displaying materials that might reasonably be considered objectionable.

The Systems Administrator has authority to block Internet access to visual depictions that are obscene, illegal, contain child pornography, or are harmful to minors.  Also, block sites in the category of Streaming Media that may result network congestion or bottlenecks when needed in order to better manage the flow of traffic within the UNC local and wide area networks.

Access by Minors

Teachers, parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding which Library resources are appropriate for their own children or students and guide them about materials they should not use. While UNC Internet Center (UIC) affirms and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of the teachers, parents and guardians to monitor and determine their children’s access to library materials and resources, including those available through the Internet,  and has taken certain measures designed to assist in the safe and effective use of these resources by all minors.

Internet Disclaimer

In offering Internet access, UIC cannot guarantee that information found through the Internet is accurate, authoritative, or factual. Nor can UIC control access points that often change rapidly or unpredictably.  UIC uses an Opensource Internet filtering system to block Internet access to visual depictions that are obscene, illegal, contain child pornography, or are harmful to minors.
In consideration of UIC providing access to the Internet, Internet users and the parents and legal guardians of Minor Internet users agree to hold UIC harmless and agree to indemnify the library from any and all liability arising out of the use of the internet  and/or library and computer laboratory workstations. UIC is not responsible for loss of any data due to service interruptions. UIC is not responsible for any commercial transactions that an Internet user participates in while accessing the Internet.

Acceptable Use

All users of electronic information resources such as Internet are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with the educational, informational and recreational purposes for which they are provided.

Responsible, ethical, use of Internet resources includes the following:

Using resources for educational, informational and recreational purposes only, not for unauthorized, illegal or unethical purposes.

Respecting the privacy of others by not misrepresenting oneself as another user, by not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others; by not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

Further respecting the privacy of others using public access workstations by not interfering with their use.

Saving information only to a diskette or printing it out according to the fee schedule posted.

Downloading (bringing information and or programs from a remote computer’s hard drive to a library computer’s hard drive) is not permissible.

Leaving the computer (screen and hard drive) exactly as you found it.

Being sensitive to the fact that the Internet Access stations are in a public location subject to view by a wide audience.

Not sending, receiving, or displaying, text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene, sexually explicit, or demeaning to any race, ethnic background, religion, disability, gender, or life style.

WIRELESS

All relevant library rules, regulations and policies apply to wireless use, including but not limited to, the UIC Internet Access Policy.

The library and UIC are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or availability or any external sites.

Wireless connections are not secure.  Users should not transmit credit card information, passwords or any other sensitive personal or business information over the library’s wireless network.  Anti-virus and security protection are the responsibility of the patron.

The library and UIC are not responsible for any loss of data, theft, or damage to personal equipment or software.

The library and UIC assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a computing device’s configurations, operation or data files resulting from connection to the wireless network.

The library and UIC reserves the right to terminate a wireless Internet session during maintenance period or any technical reasons.
