The day stood to a halt, feeling each pounding hearthbeat; everybody was waiting for the birth of the firs University Idol.

People would think that Friday the 13th, this February, was an unlucky day, but not for the Powerbelter. She had been blessed with an astonishing, powerful voice that day that filtered every nook of the university gymnasium as her supporters waited to officially hear her name being recognized as the first University Idol.

The Journey was not that easy despite the fact that people knew her as a natural singer.

That contest was one of the highlights of the 61st Foundation Anniversary of the university of Nueva Caceres last February 9-14 and was the biggest and most celebrated singing competition a really big challenge for the Powerbelter that she never thought she’d brought home the title because aside from preparing preparing for the contest she was also attending to her role as one of the directors in the KASUNDUAN, a play initiated by the College of Education.

Joy, as her Mama would call her, had really been the one who had given so much delight and pride not just to her family but also to her colleagues in the College of Education.

Nights had been her days just to prepare for the competition that lasted for three days, held at the Student Pavilion. In each elimination, she gave her best in order to stay up to the finals for she had seen the immeasurable support of her friends, colleagues, and the faculty of education who really believed in her talent. But who would stand beside her and provide her an unconditional love than her very own Mom, Mrs. Monima Lily A. Claveria, that according to Joy would not sleep while she was still awake and would make her feel less tense before the competition started in order for her to really move her spirit out. Her mom was her very big source of vigor. And that she was able to offer to God her very best and all that would happen next.

“It wasn’t easy to stand and represent our department because I knew the contestants wee really good in singing and I was just an aspirant to the titles,” said Joy when asked on how she felt after the contest.

There were seven official contenders representing the departments of Arts and Science, Commerce, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering, Nursing and High School. Each one had his/her own style in singing that made it really difficult to determine as to who would bring that made the title.

The fist elimination day, on February 11, gave Joy a dazzling, big grin when she was chosen as the “Star Idol”.

“I just knew that I have to give my best and presto! I was awarded the Star Idol.”

With the fist title attached to her name, it boosted up her confidence to strive further.

February 12, the second elimination day, somehow made her blue to get the second place in the theme ‘RNB.’

“It’s just okay, because I think RNB is not my field. But nevertheless, I gave my best performance as I always do on stage.”

The coming of the idol was really very fast. From day one, when the seven of the were all introduced as the official contestants of U-idol, one by one the lights of their stardom dimmed. Until everyday anticipated for the paramount star that would shine in splendor.

The ultimate phase only allotted three final contestants to face the university with so much pride and honor. Three representatives from top colleges in the university were now fighting for that title: the Powerbelter from the College of Education, the Angel of the Sick Room from the College of nursing and Soul Siren from the College of Business and Accountancy.

Supporters of each final contender were presents to applaud for their idols as they sang their songs for the three categories namely: “Common Song”, wherein the three of them would have to sing the song “A Moment like This” and should give their best interpretation of the song, “Novelty Song,” where they had to choose a new songs and give their best shot on it and lastly the “Idol’s Choice” where they were free to select from among the many songs what they wanted to sing.

“I was confident on my first two songs but I wasn’t so sure with my last song, though I prepared for it, because I was losing my voice then but thank God I was able to make it”, joy revealed.

As she interpreted her last piece, the echo of her voice sent shivers in one’s deepest breath. As her chosen song blared. “I surrender”, she has surrendered everything to the Almighty One leaving all the doubts and fear to Him and offering Him her most outstanding performance. That was why she garnered the highest vote form the people who supported her, making her the People’s Choice. And not just that, she had also gotten the highest score from the different judges with an unquantifiable expertise in music.

The title did not only incorporate fame and prizes; it was invaluable in a sense. For Joy who made every Education student proud, her success was a part of history that would be worthy of remembrance.
